Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is pleased to announce Elena Prenovitz of Erie has been selected by Keep America Beautiful as one of 10 high school students from across the country to serve for another year on its national Youth Advisory Council (YAC). Selections for the Council were based on a rigorous application and interview process. Elena, a senior and returning YAC member, is a member of the Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy Green Team and is in charge of the school recycling program. She is also involved in several community beautification and urban gardening projects throughout the Erie School District. Currently, she is working on a rainwater collection system that will provide a more sustainable means of watering urban gardens. Along with her environmental work, Elena has a sectional ranking in the United States Tennis Association. She recently traveled to San Diego and participated in the Junior World Team Tennis National Championships. She knows that goals can be reached through hard work, determination, and passion. The YAC creates a national framework for youth engagement, building on the model of youth service with Keep America Beautiful community-based affiliates. The newly-selected YAC members will provide an original point of view in assessing Keep America Beautiful programs, implement local service projects, and will act as ambassadors and leaders for youth service in their respective communities and states. Goals for 2016-2017 include raising awareness and increasing participation in youth-oriented Keep America Beautiful Schools initiatives to end littering. Over the past two years, the Keep America Schools initiative has produced an average 34 percent decrease in littering on participating school campuses, helping to significantly change littering behavior among elementary, middle and high school students. “Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful believes that our younger generation is the key to a cleaner more sustainable environment. We congratulate Elena for earning this prestigious position for the second year and wish her great success with her environmental work with Keep America Beautiful and beyond,” said Shannon Reiter, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful President. Through the generous support of the Wrigley Company Foundation, Youth Advisory Council members will meet with their counterparts from across the country via monthly conference calls and at Keep America Beautiful’s National Conference in Washington, D.C., which takes place January 24-26, 2017. YAC members also will be provided with grants to produce a community service project in their own community.
