The Carlisle Garden Club received the 2016 Miriam Crawfoot Memorial Conservation Award from the Letort Regional Authority in Cumberland County for designing and creating the Letort Trailhead Garden to reduce erosion near LeTort Spring Run. The 4,000-square-foot garden contains 42 species of native plants that were selected to thrive in the park’s shady clay soil environment and to provide nutrition for birds, wildlife, and pollinating insects. It also serves as an outdoor classroom for hundreds of Carlisle elementary school students. This project was financed in part through the South Mountain Partnership Mini-Grant Program, which is funded through DCNR’s Community Conservation Partnerships Program, Environmental Stewardship Fund.
