The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will host a webinar on the Passive Treatment of Mine Drainage on November 14 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. featuring Pennsylvania’s own Bob Hedin, of Hedin Environmental, and Amy Wolfe, of Trout Unlimited,

Passive treatment refers to processes that do not require frequent human intervention, operation, or maintenance, and typically employ natural construction materials, natural treatment media, and promote growth of natural vegetation.

These techniques were pioneered and perfected by groups all over Pennsylvania’s coal fields.

Passive treatment processes can be cost-effective and lower-maintenance treatment options for mine site cleanups. They also offer significant opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint associated with treatment of mine water treatment.
