The PA Horticultural Society and its Tree Tenders volunteer corps of community residents will plant 961 trees in the Greater Philadelphia region this weekend.

The activities are part of the Plant One Million campaign, the largest multi-state tree-planting effort in the nation. The goal is to restore the tree canopy cover in the region to 30 percent in order to improve the environmental health and beauty of our communities.

The PHS Tree Tenders program, which trains volunteers to plant and care for trees, is adding 961 trees in 28 Philadelphia neighborhoods and 31 communities in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties. The trees are planted along urban streets, in parks and public spaces, and in watershed areas.

The tree plantings will include 161 trees tagged with names of Philadelphia Phillies players as part of “Home Runs for Trees,” the partnership of PHS, the Phillies and Philadelphia Gas Works.

For each homer hit by a Phillie, PHS plants a tree at the end of the baseball season. Since the program began five years ago, more than 700 trees have been added to the landscape in honor of the Phillies.

Residents throughout the region are being asked to add at least one tree to their home landscape, and to “count” their tree on the Plant One Million website to strengthen research and the impact of the tree canopy.
