DEP: Comments On Keystone Metals Site Remediation In Allegheny County Due Jan. 30
|
The Department of Environmental Protection Tuesday announced it is accepting public comments on options for remediating the former Keystone Metals building site in the Borough of Cheswick, Allegheny County until January 30. DEP held a public meeting and hearing on the site remediation on Thursday. Investigations by DEP between 2011 and 2013 determined that soil on-site was contaminated with radium-226. DEP will remediate the site to the Land Recycling and Environmental Remediation Standards Act 2 Site Specific Standard. DEP considered the following four alternatives to address the threats at the site: 1) No action; 2) Cap the site with 4.5 to 6 feet of clean fill and restrict the site to industrial or commercial use; 3) Remove contaminated soil to the groundwater table and bring the area back to grade using clean fill; 4) Excavate and dispose of all contaminated soil. The preferred alternative is Alternative 2, which complies with relevant requirements and is cost-effective, but a final decision has not been made. The Administrative Record will be open for comments until January 30, 2017. Persons may also submit written comments into the record, during this time only, by sending them or delivering them to Dawna Saunders, Project Manager, Department of Environmental Protection, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
