Rep. Garth Everett (R-Lycoming) Friday was elected chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Commission at the group’s meeting in Annapolis, Md. Everett succeeds Maryland State Sen. Thomas McLain “Mac” Middleton.

“I continue to enjoy working with this outstanding organization, and it is a great honor to be elected chairman,” said Rep. Everett. “The Commission’s work in bay restoration, environmental protection, land conservation and water quality efforts, is pivotal in the Mid-Atlantic region. This mission will continue, and I look forward to my new role in moving it forward.”

The CBC is a tri-state legislative Commission representing and advising the general assemblies of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia on a series of environmental issues that impact the bay and surrounding areas. The group was created in 1980.

As chairman of the CBC, Everett, who has served on the Commission since 2011, also becomes a member of the Chesapeake Executive Council, the governing body of the federal-state partnership known as the Chesapeake Bay Program. The current chairman of the EC is Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

Rep. Everett said the chairman’s position rotates between the three states, and 2017 marks Pennsylvania’s turn.

Earlier in the day, Rep. Everett was elected chair of the Pennsylvania delegation to the Commission.

Pennsylvania’s other representatives on the Commission are Sen. Richard Alloway (R-Franklin), Sen. Gene Yaw (R-Lycoming), Rep. Keith Gillespie (R-York), Rep. Mike Sturla (D-Lancaster) and Acting DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell.
