A large tree planting project took place on April 21 and 22 on a 10-acre tract in Avondale in Plymouth Township, Luzerne County.

The effort was a partnership between the Northeast Office of the PA Environmental Council, DCNR’s Pinchot Forest District, and U.S.D.A. Office of Surface Reclamation and Enforcement.

About 300 volunteers planted nearly 8,000 trees. The seedlings planted included: White pine; Quaking aspen; Chestnut oak; and Red oaks.

Several hundred disease resistant American chestnut hybrid seedlings were also planted. This mix will provide habitat to a wide range of wildlife species and serve to reclaim the land.

Volunteers included local boy and girl scout troops, eight area high schools, a daycare center, an area women’s club, Wilkes University, and many others.

About the project, Assistant State Forester Jason Albright said, “This is one of the best volunteer planting efforts I’ve ever seen.”
