DEP County Waste Planning Grants Can Be Used For Many Purposes, Not Just Planning

The Department of Environmental Protection accepts applications for its County Municipal Waste Planning Grant Program on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Planning grants are awarded to counties for 80 percent of approved costs for preparing municipal waste management plans as required by Act 101and for carrying out related studies.

But planning grants can also be used for--

-- Surveys, investigations, inquiries, research and analysis, including those related to siting and environmental mediation;

-- Education programs on pollution prevention and household hazardous waste;

-- Providing technical assistance to small businesses for pollution prevention; and

-- Feasibility studies and project development for municipal waste processing or disposal facilities, except for facilities for the combustion of municipal waste that are not proposed to be operated for the recovery of energy.

For example, DEP just awarded grants to Berks ($53,246) and Blair ($75,000) counties for household hazardous waste education programs (Sept. 2 PA Bulletin page 5280).

For more information, visit DEP’s Recycling Financial Assistance webpage.  Questions should be directed to Mark Vettero, DEP Bureau of Waste Management 717-772-5719 or send email to: mvottero@pa.gov.
