The USGS Pennsylvania Water Science Center Friday recorded groundwater oscillations in Juniata County from the 8.1-magnitude earthquake off Mexico.. An 8.1-magnitude earthquake shook Mexico's southern coast Friday morning at 12:49 AM EDT. Fourteen minutes later (1:03 AM EDT), seismic waves from that quake caused the water level to oscillate as much as 0.2 feet in USGS observation well JU-351 in Juniata County, according to Dennis Risser, a Hydrogeologist at the USGS Center. The observation well is located about 2,000 miles away from the earthquake epicenter. This interesting hydrologic response was observed because water levels are recorded in the well at 1-minute intervals. Other USGS observation wells in Pennsylvania record water levels at intervals of 15 minutes or greater. The data for the Juniata County well is available online.
