Request For Qualifications To Design Public Plaza At Hazelwood Green Redevelopment Site In Pittsburgh

Hazelwood Green, a former steel mill site that is the City of Pittsburgh’s largest riverfront redevelopment project and last urban brownfield, has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for design of the first public plaza to be built at the 178-acre site.

The two-acre space, currently referred to as the Plaza, will serve as an open, welcoming public gathering and event space for workers and tenants at the site, for the neighboring community of Hazelwood, and for  future community activities and programs.

The rectangular Plaza area is located adjacent to Mill 19, a soaring, expansive former mill structure that will be home to the site’s first anchor tenant – Carnegie Mellon University’s Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, currently under construction.

Mill 19 will open out onto the one of the Plaza’s four sides, with a second side facing Hazelwood Green’s Main Street.

The remaining two sides of the Plaza will be developed in accordance to the site’s master plan, as market interest evolves.  An additional 42 acres at Hazelwood Green are currently licensed to UATC (Uber).

The RFQ outlines Hazelwood Green’s Public Plaza’s objectives, proposal requirements, selection process and project schedule.

The deadline for proposal responses is December 20, 2017, 5 p.m. EST. All questions from design teams must be submitted by December 1, 2017; the deadline for intent to submit is December 6, 2017. Hazelwood Green anticipates awarding the project to the selected design team in late March 2018.

Located in the city of Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood and situated along the Monongahela River, Hazelwood Green is envisioned to become a world-class model for sustainable development encompassing a mix of offices, research and development, light manufacturing, housing, retail, parks and public green spaces, trails and transportation. 

With a goal of achieving USGBC LEED for Neighborhood Development Gold certification, the site’s master plan will prioritize reuse of land in urban infill locations; create well connected, walkable communities; and pursue efficient use of resources. 

Green infrastructure has already been installed to capture all rainwater on the site.
