Feb. 20 Water Insights Seminar: Policies To Minimize Damage Caused By Aquatic Invasive Species

The February 20 Water Insights Seminar will feature a presentation by Dr. Kate Zipp, Assistant Professor of Environmental and Resource Economics at Penn State, on Management Policies To Minimize Damage Caused By Aquatic Invasive Species.

Invasive species have long been recognized as a leading threat to biodiversity, and lakes are especially affected by species invasions because they are closed systems sensitive to disruption.

As a result, aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been the focus of intensive management efforts aimed at controlling or minimizing their spread.

This presentation will investigate the optimal location and timing of management strategies such as boat ramp fees or boat wash stations aimed at controlling the spread of AIS.

Extending previous bioeconomic simulators, Dr. Zipp was able to solve for the strategies that minimize the total expected welfare loss from the establishment of AIS in a lake system for both shoreline property owners and recreational boaters in a region over a specified time period (e.g. fifteen years).

The Seminar will be held from Noon to 1:00 p.m. in Room 102 of the Forest Resources Building at Penn State University in State College.  Click Here to attend the Seminar by webinar (sign in with your name and email).
