Friends Of Allegheny Wilderness: Allegheny River & Watershed Cleanup May 12
|
|
The Allegheny River and Watershed Cleanup will take place on May 12 starting at the Onoville Marina, 704 W. Perimeter Road, Steamburg, NY, just north of the Allegheny National Forest in Warren County, at 8:00 a.m. where volunteers will sign-in and get trash bags, gloves and other supplies. Since 2008, more than 2,900 volunteers have donated almost 24,000 hours and have removed almost 450 cubic yards of trash from the watershed. They have pulled out television sets; microwave ovens; lawn chairs; refrigerators; 55-gallon drums; more than 1,600 tires and have filled many bags of recyclable metal, glass, plastic and aluminum. The positive effects of the annual Reservoir Clean-up are very apparent. As a result of this annual "community conservation event" the shorelines and waters of the Allegheny Reservoir are much safer and cleaner places for the wildlife and recreationalists who use them. The last several years, cleanup teams have been joined by the Seneca Nation of Indians and Cattaraugus County's Onoville Marina, who served as hosts for the activities and played key roles in making the event the smashing success that it was. The annual cleanup continues to be a cooperative effort involving the US Forest Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, Warren County Adult Probation and Parole, and numerous other agencies, organizations, and businesses.
