Brodhead Watershed Assn. Water Wiser Kids Insect Safari Aug. 17 In Monroe County

The Brodhead Watershed Association will host another it its series of Water Wiser Kids Programs August 17, this time an Insect Safari at the ForEvergreen Nature Preserve in Analomink, Monroe County from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

In all the animal kingdom, there is no group larger and more diverse than the insects — beetles to butterflies and everything that wiggles and squiggles in between!

Children and their families are invited to join Join Darryl and Jackie Speicher of Pocono Avian Research Center to explore ForEvergreen Nature Preserve in search of these tiny creatures.

Armed with nets and jars, participants will take to the fields and forest edges to find everything that creeps, crawls, flies, buzzes, and chirps.

Humans tend to dwell on mosquito bites and bee stings, but insects provide far more services that benefit us. They pollinate the plants that give us food. They even consume our roadkill!

There are more than 500,000 types of insects in the world — with more than 450 species found in Pennsylvania in summer. About 10,000 new species are found and named every year by amateur and professional naturalists across the globe.

Safari participants will seek all stages of these shape-shifters-- from eggs and larvae to pupae and adults.

Bring your butterfly net. If you don’t have one, we will have some to share. Wear sturdy shoes and dress to be outside. If you wish, bring a picnic supper to enjoy before the program.

This program is free, but registration is required and limited. Register by calling  570-839-1120 or send email to: info@brodheadwatershed.org.   Directions to the event will be sent when you register.

This event is part of the Water Wiser Kids Series sponsored by Brodhead Watershed Association, funded by a Dr. Claus Jordan Endowment Grant from Lehigh Valley Health Network Pocono Foundation.
