DEP Deputy Secretary for Waste, Air, Radiation and Remediation George Hartenstein will retire at the end of March after 37 years of public service at the Department of Environmental Protection.

Prior to his appointment as Deputy Secretary, Hartenstein served as the Director of the Bureau of Environmental Cleanup and Brownfields from 2012 to 2016

In that position, he was responsible for the implementation of the award-winning Land Recycling Cleanup Program, brownfield redevelopment, state and federal superfund response, federal facilities restoration, natural resource damage assessment, and aboveground and underground storage tank regulation.

He spent a total of 27 years working in Pennsylvania’s remediation programs and 7 years in the mining program.

“George has served the people of Pennsylvania with dedication and distinction for nearly 4 decades,” said former DEP Secretary David Hess.  “His expertise and thoughtfulness will be missed, but our environment is better off because of the restoration work he did.”

A native of Pittsburgh, George graduated from Penn State with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
