The Foundation for Sustainable Forests is now accepting registrations for the 8th Annual Loving The Land Through Working Forests Conference May 11 at The Woodland Lodge, Grand Valley, Warren County.

The Conference celebrates sustainable forestry and showcases how active management can benefit both people and the land.

On the program are--

-- Notes from the North:  Plenary Speaker, Dave Mance III, Editor of Northern Woodlands Magazine.

-- The Land Ethic: A Walking Conversation, Presented by Troy Firth, Founder, Foundation for Sustainable Forests [and 2019 winner of a Western PA Environmental Award]

-- The Family Forest Carbon Initiative, Presented by Joshua Parrish, The Nature Conservancy-PA Working Woodlands Program

The Family Forest Carbon Initiative is a partnership between the American Forest Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, to engage America’s 21 million family forest owners in globally significant climate mitigation.

Responding to this challenge, AFF and TNC, are building and piloting a scalable and replicable voluntary incentives program in partnership with U.S. businesses, NGOs, state and federal agencies.

The Program, will offer payments to family landowners for implementing carbon-positive forest management on their lands. Rather than basing payments on inventories of current carbon, the initiative will incentivize specific forest management practices that scientifically demonstrate enhanced carbon sequestration over common forest practices.

In the session we will discuss the current state of the forest carbon markets and existing tools for landowners. TNC and AFF will showcase the Program and practices being piloted in Pennsylvania and become part of conservation forestry toolkits.

-- It's Your Legacy!, Presented by Allyson Muth, Penn State Center for Private Forests

Figuring out what happens to the land after you is often one of the more difficult decisions to make. Finding the resources to help, professional advice, and ensuring your wishes (and those of your family if they’re part of the equation) are honored can add complications. Join us for a conversation about the process for making a plan.

We’ll talk through communications, decision-making, and share a new guide and collection of case studies to help you on your path. It’s your legacy!

-- Managing your Woodland for Long-Term Adaptation to Climate Change, Presented by Patricia Leopold, USDA Forest-Service Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science

The Adaptation Workbook is a structured process to consider the potential effects of climate change and design land management and conservation actions that can help prepare for changing conditions.

The process is completely flexible to accommodate a wide variety of geographic locations, ownership types, ecosystems and land uses, management goals, and project sizes. We'll cover the basic steps today, and spend some time in the woods testing it out.
