North Pocono CARE is seeking volunteers for a riparian buffer planting on May 4 along Choke Creek in Thornhurst Township, Lackawanna County starting at Noon. The buffer planting project will benefit wildlife and improve water quality in an area located in the Pinchot State Forest and State Game Lands 91 where trees and other shading vegetation were cut down for a power line. The plants chosen for the buffer will not interfere with the power line but will help shade the creek and reduce the temperature of the water, thus helping the native trout population. The plants will also help stabilize the banks to minimize erosion. Volunteers are asked to meet on Phelps Road in the Pinchot State Forest in Thornhurst Township at the trail access to Choke Creek Falls-- GPS coordinates: 41.174636, -75.609056-- Bring sturdy footwear, gloves and a small shovel or digging iron. Lunch and Water Provided. For directions or more information, send email to: NPCARE@att.net or call 570-262-7055. If you are bringing a group, please contact us so that we will have enough for lunch! This is the second year for our volunteer streamside planting of trees and shrubs in a power line cut. In 2018, volunteers planted 200 trees and shrubs along Ash Creek in Clifton Township. Many of those plants are growing well and will soon help provide shade over the water. This year, we have more than doubled the number of small trees and shrubs to 450! North Pocono CARE is a volunteer nonprofit organization formed more than 20 years ago to preserve the environment in the North Pocono area. Its primary focus is on protecting the headwaters of the Lehigh River and its watershed.
