Next South Mountain Speakers Series Event Highlights Local Craft Brewing June 11 In Shippensburg

On June 11, the South Mountain Partnership Speakers Series will highlight local craft brewing at an event at the Appalachian Brewing Company in Shippensburg starting at 6:30 p.m.

The program will feature a presentation by Dr. Allison Feeney, professor of geography and earth science at Shippensburg based on his book-- For The Love Of Beer. The book examines Pennsylvania's brewing history and how the region’s geography, history, and architecture are all connected.

In early 2019, Shippensburg University began offering beer brewing courses with Dr. Feeney as the instructor. So, to say she knows a thing or two about local beer is an understatement!

"What really got me excited [about PA beer] was the small breweries in the little towns throughout the state that are really preserving downtown's and main streets," Feeney said. She also notes that the brewing industry has a greater than $7 billion impact on the state’s economy and that breweries tend to support local farmers, artisans and craftsmen.

Dr. Feeney will highlight some of those Pennsylvania breweries and what makes them unique during the June presentation.

The brewery will be open for people to purchase beverages and dinner, should they wish, so stop by on June 11 to learn firsthand from Dr. Feeney about what makes Pennsylvania, including the South Mountain region, so great for the craft brewing industry!

The South Mountain Speakers Series is presented as a revival of the Michaux Lectures, a series of talks given by Joseph Rothrock to build a groundswell of public support for his work to preserve and restore Pennsylvania’s forested landscape.

The late 19th century Michaux Lectures were an educational mission that catalyzed real change in Pennsylvania’s environmental history. As we face the challenges of the 21st century, the South Mountain Speakers Series is intended to encourage a new generation to find in the past a positive vision for the future of the South Mountain landscape.

Sept. 12 - Illegal Dumping

The next program in this Series-- Methods For Combating Illegal Dumping and Vandalism In A Forest Setting-- will be held on September 12 at Caledonia State Park in Franklin County.
