Dark Skies

In addition to fireflies, Forest, Potter and Warren counties have dark sky observation areas for unobstructed star gazing, including Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County and Route 44, a state-designated Highway to the Stars in Potter County.

The Pennsylvania Firefly Festival, Inc. has a mission of educating the public about firefly science and conservation.  PAFF celebrates the annual PA Firefly Festival on the fourth Saturday in June.

This coincides with the mating displays of over fifteen different species of firefly in the Allegheny National Forest area including the Synchronous firefly and the unique "Chinese Lantern" firefly along the Tionesta Creek.
