Western PA Conservancy To Undertake Good Samaritan Mine Reclamation Project In Elk County

The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the June 15 PA Bulletin announcing the Western PA Conservancy will undertake a project to treat abandoned mine drainage and reclaim abandoned mine land in Jay Township, Elk County under the Environmental Good Samaritan Program(PA Bulletin, page 3157)

The 25 acre project will improve water quality in Cherry Run and Bennett Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek.

A copy of the proposal is available and public comments will be accepted by DEP’s Knox District Mining Office, P.O. Box 669, 310 Best Avenue, Knox PA 16232-0669.

Good Samaritan Program

DEP regularly receives proposals under the state Environmental Good Samaritan Act Program for both mine reclamation and oil and gas well plugging.

The Good Samaritan Program is for landowners, citizens, watershed associations, environmental organizations and, governmental entities who do not have a legal responsibility to reclaim abandoned lands, abate water pollution or plug abandoned wells, but are interested in addressing these problems.
