DEP July 17 Hearing On Specialty Granules' Pitts Quarry Water Quality Permit In Adams County

The Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public information session and hearing July 17 on Specialty Granules LLC’s application to renew the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for its Pitts Quarry, located in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County.

The meeting and hearing will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fairfield Fire and EMS Building, 106 Steelman Street, Fairfield, PA 17320.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m, DEP representatives from the Cambria District Mining Office will be available to answer questions concerning the permit renewal application. At 7:00 p.m., formal comments regarding the permit renewal application will be accepted.

 If individuals are unable to attend the hearing, comments can be written and sent via mail to Chad Paronish, Cambria District Mining Office, 286 Industrial Park Road, Ebensburg, PA 15931, or email to: chaparonis@pa.gov.  

The permitted area is located within the Toms Creek Watershed. Precipitation exceeding a 100 year/24-hour storm event would be discharged through two outfalls to an unnamed tributary to Toms Creek, which is designated as High Quality, Cold Water Fishes, and Migratory Fishes.

A copy of the application is available for public review at the Adams County Conservation District, 670 Old Harrisburg Road, Suite 201, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
