Lacawac Sanctuary: Become A Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network Citizen Scientist In Wayne County
Photo

The Pocono Lake Ecological Observatory Network is a regional lake monitoring and education program run by Lacawac Sanctuary at Lake Ariel in Wayne County.

Lake Wallenpaupack, in Pike and Wayne counties, is a focal point of tourism and recreation and understanding what factors influence water quality is important to everyone in the region.

Why Citizen Science?

Wallenpaupack is a large, weirdly-shaped lake which means conditions may be very different depending on where in the lake you are. Working together, citizen scientists can collect data from many locations on the lake at the same time. These data can then be used to identify pristine or problem areas.

How to Become a Citizen Limnologist-- a scientist that studies lakes--

-- Attend a training session at Lacawac Sanctuary to receive a sampling kit

-- Choose a Wallenpaupack sampling location, such as your dock or boat

-- Follow the weekly sampling schedule. Each sampling event takes ~15 minutes

-- Return your datasheet and samples to Lacawac Sanctuary

This program is great for school-age kids and for science projects
