Penn State Extension Hosts Intensive 5-Day Workshop Series On Managing Mixed Oak Forests Sept. 30 to Oct. 4

Penn State Extension is hosting a 5-day series of workshops designed to give participants a comprehensive knowledge about forest ecology and management of mixed oak forests.

The workshops will be held at the Jefferson County Conservation District in Brookville, Jefferson County and the Cook Forest State Park Office in Cooksburg, Forest County on--

-- September 30: Noon to 5:00 p.m., Jefferson Conservation District;

-- October 1: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Cook Forest;

-- October 2: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Cook Forest;

-- October 3: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Cook Forest; and

-- October 4: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Cook Forest.

Nearly half of the session is conducted in the field where participants have a chance to apply SILVAH techniques, mark stands for crop tree release and thinning, and view examples of regeneration and overstory management techniques.

Field exercises are done in crews and will be conducted regardless of weather, please dress appropriately.

Participants are expected to bring a hardhat and standard forest inventory equipment.

A laptop, with SILVAH software installed, is helpful, but not required.

Participants are responsible for their own meals during the event. There will be a dinner offered Wednesday evening for those interested in participating.
