On August 7, the Clean Air Council called on Gov. Wolf and the Public Utility Commission to shut down the Mariner East 2 Pipeline after a loud explosion from the pipeline's Boot Road Pump Station in West Goshen township, Chester county rattled windows and shook pictures of the walls of homes up to a half mile away.

The explosion was due to an over-pressurization and subsequent pressure release of combustible gases in a flare stack at the station and was described by the pipeline's operator-- Sunoco-- as a "backfire."

“Clean Air Council has been sounding the alarm on the Boot Road Pump Station and air quality concerns for years," said Joseph Otis Minott, Esq., Executive Director of the Council.  "This incident illustrates once again the regulatory holes and lack of oversight that have allowed Sunoco to endanger the public and put our air quality at risk.  We stand firm in our call to Governor Wolf and his PUC to shut down Mariner East once and for all.”
