DEP Posts Updates To Radiation Monitoring Requirements For Oil & Gas Operations For Comment

The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the October 19 PA Bulletin inviting comments on draft technical guidance on Radioactivity Monitoring at Solid Waste Processing and Disposal Facilities adding provisions related to the oil and gas industry (DEP ID: 250-3100-001).

The primary revisions amend the document to include guidance for the oil and gas industry in response to new provisions in 25 Pa. Code Chapter 78a (relating to unconventional wells) requiring unconventional oil and gas operators to comply with this technical guidance.

In addition, outdated and redundant information is being removed; guidance is being provided for nonsolid waste recycler operations; environmental modeling guidance is being improved; and radiation protection standards are being compiled in one place for subject facilities.

Comments are due by November 18 and can be submitted via DEP’s eComment webpage.  Questions should be directed to Kristina Hoffman by sending email to: krihoffman@pa.gov or call 717-787-2480.
