Leaders from the U.S. Forest Service's Wilderness and Wild & Scenic Rivers staff are visiting the Allegheny National Forest this week for a team retreat. They came from as far away as Washington, D.C.; West Virginia; Missoula, Montana; and the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area in Minnesota.

The first item on the agenda Tuesday was to make a pilgrimage to Tionesta, along the National Wild and Scenic Allegheny River, to visit sites related to Tionesta native Howard Zahniser, The Wilderness Society executive director, and the author of the federal Wilderness Act of 1964.           

Kirk Johnson of Warren-based Friends of Allegheny Wilderness provided 'tour guide' services for the afternoon.

Friends of Allegheny Wilderness was the lead sponsoring organization for the Howard Zahniser PA Historical and Museum Commission roadside marker located north of Tionesta along the Allegheny River that was dedicated on August 13, 2001.

Wilderness Act of 1964 author Howard Zahniser and his wife Alice are laid to rest in Tionesta's Riverside Cemetery. Their rough-hewn gravestone, selected from the surrounding hillsides, faces their nearby beloved National Wild and Scenic Allegheny River.

Most of the other gravestones in the Riverside Cemetery face away from the river.
