PPL Electric Utilities will start accepting applications for its Future Environmental Leaders Student Scholarships on December 1.  The deadline for applications is April 30.

The contest is open to high school seniors planning to attend either two-year or four-year schools to pursue an environmentally-related career.

Seven winners will be selected, one from each geographic region served by PPL. Each winner will receive $2,000 toward college expenses.

“We had tremendous interest in the scholarship program when we launched it early this year,” said Meg Welker, a senior environmental professional at PPL. “The students’ commitment to the environment, to forging a cleaner, greener future, was evident in their contest essays. We’re proud to play even a small role in helping them achieve their dreams.”

Welker said environmental stewardship at PPL is about much more than following established rules and guidelines that protect the air, land and water.

“We’ll be looking for students who possess passion for being a positive force for the environment,” she said.

A key aspect of the scholarship application is a short essay that asks students to explain why they’re interested in pursuing a career with environmental ties.

PPL employees and members of their immediate families or households are not eligible for the scholarship.
