DCNR’s Bureau of State Parks released its annual Cavity-Nesting Trails Summary Report, which shows that 50 state parks monitored 2,041 boxes and fledged a total of 7,848 birds through the dedicated work of volunteers and staff in 2019.

Among the nesting cavity birds were Eastern bluebirds, Tree swallows, Purple martins, American kestrels, Titmice, Flycatchers, and Mergansers

Despite a wet and cooler early spring this year across most of the state, this is an increase in fledgling numbers compared to last year.

Since the program’s beginning in 1980, volunteers have helped to fledge more than 133,000 individual birds and 19 species.
