CANCELED Due To Coronavirus Concerns: Scott Weidensaul, acclaimed writer, lecturer and field researcher on topics of ornithology and natural history, will be the guest speaker at the third annual Pennsylvania Wildlife Gala held at the Nittany Lion Inn in State College on Friday, April 3. Weidensaul is the author of more than two dozen books, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist “Living on the Wind: Across the Hemisphere with Migratory Birds.” He is an active field researcher, studying saw-whet owl migration for more than two decades, as well as winter hummingbirds, bird migration in Alaska, and the winter movements of snowy owls through Project SNOWstorm, which he co-founded. Weidensaul is a founder of the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art in Millersburg, Dauphin County, and has served as its research director since 1998. He is Interim Chair of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and directs the ornithology program for National Audubon’s Hog Island Center on the coast of Maine. A native of Pennsylvania, Weidensaul started his writing career as a weekly columnist for the Pottsville Republican. He left that post in 1988 to pursue a freelance writing career in nature and wildlife. Today, Weidensaul is a contributing editor for Audubon, a columnist for Bird Watcher’s Digest and writes for a variety of other publications including Living Bird. A dynamic speaker, Weidensaul will share the story of Project SNOWstorm, an international collaborative research project that he helped to organize in 2013 to take advantage of the large influx of snowy owls into the eastern United States. Project SNOWstorm continues to make discoveries about the life and ecology of the Snowy Owl. Tickets to the Pennsylvania Wildlife Gala are $125 per person. Proceeds benefit the Wildlife for Everyone Foundation’s mission to promote wildlife conservation and education in Pennsylvania. For information or to purchase tickets, visit Pennsylvania Wildlife Gala webpage or call 814-238-8138. RSVP by March 27.
