The Department of Environmental Protection is now accepting applications for EPA Section 319 Watershed Restoration Grants.  Applications are due October 23.

96 percent of water quality impaired watersheds in Pennsylvania are polluted because of non point source pollution-- agricultural runoff, abandoned mine drainage and polluted stormwater.

Section 319 Nonpoint Source Management Grants are provided by EPA to support local projects to reduce this kind of water pollution.

Eligible applications include watershed associations, county or municipal governments, conservation districts, council of government or other nonprofit group, education institutions or municipal authorities.

DEP has established these priorities for funding--

-- Priority will be given to BMP implementation applications that address nonpoint source pollution originating from agriculture, stormwater runoff, stream channel degradation and AMD where the proposed project is identified in an existing Section 319 Watershed Implementation Plan.

-- Preference will be given to projects that effectively addresses the impairments of concern in a cost-effective way

-- Preference will be given for WIP implementation in Tier 1-4 within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

-- Applications that implement statewide or regional projects addressing nonpoint source pollution to restore or protect water quality may be considered, if funding remains after addressing projects implementing existing WIPs, developing new WIPs and revising existing WIPs.
