Retired Executive Director of the Fish and Boat Commission, John Arway, will speak at Allegheny County's North Area Environmental Council's virtual Annual Meeting on October 6  starting at 7:00 p.m.

“Forty Years a Biologist” draws on Arway’s experiences during his career with the Fish and Boat Commission, including the early movement to clean up Pennsylvania’s waterways.

With a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Aquatic Biology, Mr. Arway began his career with the Fish and Boat Commission in 1980 as a fisheries biologist. 

He was mentored by former director Ralph Abele in applying the “Resources First” philosophy. 

Promoted first to Division Chief in 1987, Mr. Arway was named Executive Director of the Commission in 2010 and held that position until his retirement in 2018.

Passionate and outspoken, Mr. Arway sought to integrate science into politics during his leadership.  He also promoted collaboration by the Commission with a wide range of constituencies including universities, nonprofits, and private organizations. 

For example, with the help of Trout Unlimited chapters and other groups of the public, the Commission was able to expedite the surveying of over one thousand miles of waterways across Pennsylvania, and then secure DEP protection for identified trout streams.

Mr. Arway’s presentation offers a behind-the-scenes look at his own experiences within the Fish and Boat Commission for 38 years; and going forward, what can be accomplished with a philosophy of doing your duty, without fear.
