PA Resources Council Announces October Glass Recycling Collection Events In Allegheny County

The PA Resources Council has three week-long and two one-day Traveling Glass Recycling Collection Events scheduled in October for Allegheny County.

The events serve residents living in municipalities no longer accepting glass in curbside recycling collection and provide free recycling service to residents that rotates through a variety of locations in western Pennsylvania.

The events will be held--

-- October 3: Settlers Cabin Park Wave Pool Parking Lot, 635 Ridge Road, Pittsburgh from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. [held in conjunction with a PRC Hard To Recycle Event];

-- October 10 to 15: Hampton Community Swimming Pool, 3101 McCully Road, allison Park, presented by Hampton Township;

-- October 17 to 22: Borough Of Thornburg Maintenance Facility, 25 Rutgers Road, Pittsburgh, presented by the Borough of Thornburg;

-- October 24: Galleria At Pittsburgh Mills, 590 Pittsburgh Mills Blvd, Tarentum from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. [held in conjunction with a PRC Hard To Recycle Event]; and

-- October 24 to 29: Boyce Park Soccer Fields, Boyce Park, Pierson Run Road and Centerview Driver in Plum, presented by the Borough of Plum.

“The bin visits various locations on a weekly basis from Saturday through Thursday and provides residents with a safe method for recycling glass while eliminating the need to interact with other individuals or touch shared surfaces,” according to PRC Environmental Program Coordinator Ashley DiGregorio.  “In addition to the weeklong engagements, PRC has recently introduced one-day bin appearances at its hard-to-recycle collection events as an additional service to area residents.”

“Reasons for recycling glass include the fact that glass can be recycled forever,” said DiGregorio.  “Recycling glass requires 70 percent less energy than when manufacturing glass from raw materials, and a glass bottle can go from recycling bin back to the store shelf in as little as 30 days.”

Individuals can drop off glass bottles, jars and jugs of all colors (no color sorting required).  Containers should be empty and rinsed, with lids and labels still on.  Bags and boxes used to deliver glass must be discarded off-site.

Since launching its Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program in early June, PRC has collected more than 58 tons of glass and has expanded the program’s format to include four-hour appearances at hard-to-recycle events.

PRC’s Traveling Glass Recycling Bin Program is sponsored by Owens-Illinois, Inc. and CAP Glass.
