Increase In Human Caused Wildfires Sparks Concern For Allegheny National Forest

The USDA Forest Service has noticed an increase in wildfires across the Allegheny National Forest in Warren County due to recreational activities.

A one-acre wildfire located along the narrow rocky ridge west of the Minister Creek campground near Sheffield was ignited by an abandoned campfire on October 15.

The ANF is seeing a welcomed increase in recreational visitors, but reminds users to observe fire safe practices and Leave No Trace Principles.

Forest visitors should know before they go:

-- Check the fire danger for the area you plan to visit.

-- Verify if there are current restrictions in place.

-- Build fires within contained fire rings on top of mineral soil and not on leaf litter, duff or organic matter.

-- Never leave the fire unattended.

-- Drown, stir and feel your campfire coals to ensure that the fire is dead out and cold to the touch.
