On February 4, the Associated Press reported the money the Senate and House spend to operate their own offices grew by more than $30 million in 2019-20 and they added $28 million to their own operating surplus, which is now over $200 million.

All this while the state government's budget deficit ballooned and many residents struggled to pay bills during the pandemic.

The numbers were included in a Legislative Audit Advisory Commission report issued Thursday without debate by the Senate and House members on the Commission.

Total spending by the Senate and House went from $392 million up $30 million from the prior year's $362 million.

The Senate and House surplus went from $172 million to just over $200 million.
