On February 1, Mia Majetschak, an Advanced Master Naturalist in Florida, reported to PA Environment Digest one of the endangered Piping Plovers from Presque Isle State Park in Erie is healthy and well at Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, along the Gulf Coast in Florida near Tampa.

Black band #239 - orange band with red dot - is its identifier.

Mia passed along her congratulations on a successful Piping Plover breeding program in Pennsylvania!

In August, the Game Commission celebrated the end of the fourth consecutive successful nesting season at Presque Isle.

The Piping Plover is the most endangered beach-nesting bird in Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes region.  They were absent as a Pennsylvania breeding bird for over 60 years.

Thanks to years of habitat-restoration work, two pairs of piping plovers returned in 2017 to nest in the Gull Point Natural Area at Presque Isle and they continue to return.
