PA Sustainable Energy Board Hears Updates From Sustainable Energy Funds

The Public Utility Commission and the PA Sustainable Energy Board held their annual meeting on April 29.

The meeting provided updates from the regional Sustainable Energy Funds (SEFs) and update Commonwealth agencies and other interested groups on the funds’ activities.

Some of the projects being discussed at the meeting will include the following--

-- The PECO Sustainable Development Fund will present information on its support for the modernization of the building energy conservation code in the City of Philadelphia.

-- The Metropolitan Edison Co. and Pennsylvania Electric Co. SEF will discuss 2020 grant and program-related investment approvals, including those related to energy retrofits, solar projects, and their support of a large-scale research and development project, in addition to outlining priorities for 2021.

-- The West Penn Power Co. SEF will be discussing their 2020 operations, projects, and how these were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Kane Passive House project also will be showcased.

-- The PPL Sustainable Energy Fund will provide information on the completion of its net zero building at the beginning of the year and carried out lending, C-PACE, and educational activities throughout the pandemic. For 2021 the organization will continue to work to expend C-PACE and provide leadership to bringing renewable fuel oil to Pennsylvania.

The PASEB was originally established by the Commission in 1999 to provide oversight, guidance and technical assistance to the regional sustainable energy boards that fund projects such as wind farms, solar power systems, smart thermostat programs and the construction of buildings using energy efficient technologies.

On Aug. 7, 2003, the Commission issued an order further defining the role of the PASEB.  That order charged the PASEB with holding an annual meeting; enhancing communications among the four funds and state agencies; and establishing bylaws and a “best business practices” model.
