PA Resources Council Sets Schedule Of Western PA Backyard Composting, Rain Barrel, Recycling Workshops In September

The PA Resources Council will hold eight backyard composting, rain barrel and recycling workshops in September, both webinars and in-person in Allegheny and Washington counties. Pre-registration is required for all workshops. The workshops are sponsored by Green Mountain Energy. Backyard Composting Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost. The $70 course fee includes instruction plus a FreeGarden EARTH compost bin, which features an 82-gallon capacity ideal for both urban and suburban settings. Composting webinars will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 on September 1 and 7. In-person backyard composting workshops will be held-- -- September 15, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Fern Hollow Nature Center, Allegheny County -- September 20, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Buffalo Inn at South Park, Allegheny County -- September 21, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Parish Hill at North Park, Allegheny County -- September 25, from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. at Bedner’s Farm & Greenhouse, Washington County Compost bin distribution in Southwestern PA by appointment only. Individuals will register for a time to pick up rain barrels after completing online instruction. Rain Barrel Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape. Learn about problems associated with stormwater runoff and techniques to reduce your contribution to watershed pollution. The Rain Barrel/Watershed Awareness Webinar will be held September 9 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The $80 course fee includes instruction plus a FreeGarden RAIN 55-gallon easy-to-install rain barrel. Rain barrel distribution in Southwestern PA by appointment only. Individuals will register for a time to pick up rain barrels after completing online instruction. Recycling PRC will offer a free “Recycling & Waste Reduction” webinar on Tuesday, September 14, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. The online workshop will answer common questions surrounding recycling issues such as curbside collection, hard-to-recycle materials and pharmaceutical disposal.
