Cameron County Hosts Sinnemahone Paddle April 9, Part Of Triple Crown; Adds New Class Of Tandem Kayaks

The Sinnemahone Paddle organizers say a request by kayak enthusiasts is enlarging the classes for the race Saturday, April 9.  For the first time tandem kayaks will paddle the Driftwood Branch of the Sinnemahoning Creek.

Kayak and canoe enthusiasts began racing on the stream more than 50 years ago.  Canoe racer Ken Gerg remembers competitors braving snow for some years.  The weather forecast is predicting 48 degrees at race time.

One of the oldest events is the Bob Umbenhauer race.  Any stock aluminum canoe paddled by two participants is eligible for the traveling trophy.

“For the first time in three years youth are joining the kayak competition.  This is one class that has been offered each year, but has dwindled to no competitors the last three years.  This year several under the age of 17 will take to the water,” says Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Director Tina Solak.

The race is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. from the canoe/kayak launch across from the Emporium Country Club.

Water levels are always watched at this time of year.  Despite rainfall last week the water level is hovering at the low point for the event.

If it does not increase, the start of the race will mimic last year's event which ended in Sinnemahoning instead of Driftwood.

Mountaineer Search and Rescue is coordinating the safety plan for the race.  Swift water rescue teams from PA Region 3 (Jefferson County), and Pine Glen, will have boats on the water.

Volunteers from Sinnemahoning and Emporium Fire Departments, Cameron County ambulance, Sinnemahoning ambulance and Elkland Search and Rescue will all be at the race.

Anyone willing to spot for the event should contact the Cameron County Chamber office at 814-486-4314.
