PA Resources Council Hosts Composting, Recycling, Rain Barrel Workshops, Webinars In September For Southwest PA Residents

In September, the Pennsylvania Resources Council will host environmental education webinars to teach Southwestern PA residents principles of backyard composting and options for recycling a wide variety of materials. 

Following online instruction, individuals will pick up their compost bins at PRC’s office in Pittsburgh. 

In Allegheny County, PRC will conduct an in-person Backyard Composting Workshop on September 15 and an in-person Watershed Awareness & Rain Barrel Workshop on September 28.  Participants will take home compost bins and rain barrels at the conclusion of the workshops.

Registration is required for all workshops and webinars.

September Webinars

All webinars listed below take place online from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Following online instruction, individuals will pick up their compost bins at PRC’s office in Pittsburgh. 

-- Recycling & Waste Reduction Free Statewide Webinar: September 20

Learn recycling best practices concerning curbside collection, hard-to-recycle material, household chemicals and pharmaceutical disposal then ask questions during Q&A session.

-- Backyard Composting Webinar: September 27

Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost.

$70 course fee includes 82-gallon compost bin

In-Person Workshops

Learn the benefits of backyard composting, including the overall process, methods for setting up a compost pile, proper maintenance and ways to use finished compost.  The $70 course fee includes 82-gallon compost bin.

The workshop will be held at North Park, Rose Barn, Pearce Mill Road, Allison Park, Allegheny County from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

-- Watershed Awareness & Rain Barrel Workshop: September 28

Discover how to harvest rainwater from your roof, store it in a barrel and use it in the landscape.  Learn about stormwater runoff problems and learn techniques to reduce watershed pollution. The $80 course fee includes 55-gallon rain barrel.

The workshop will be held at the Phipps Garden Center, 1059 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
