Pennsylvania Firefly Festival: Lights Out For Lightning Bugs! June 24-30
Photo

If you’re looking for a way to see more fireflies this year and in years to come, join the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival by turning your Lights Out For Lightning Bugs this summer.

During the week of June 24 through June 30, you can do your part in your own yard by turning off your outside lights.  Better yet, turn them off all summer.  You will be helping more than just fireflies and/or lightning bugs.

The International Dark Skies- Pittsburgh and our partners, US Army Corps of Engineers Tionesta Lake in Forest County are promoting the initiative to reduce Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) which interferes with the mating flashes of lightning bugs.

ALAN has increased around the world and impacts all sorts of nocturnal species even human beings.

If you turn your lights off starting now, you will increase your chances of seeing fireflies this year.

You will be amazed at how much you can see in your own yard once you let your eyes adjust to the dark.  You just may see an amazing natural light show!

For more information, visit the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival Lights Out For Lightning Bugs webpage.

Visit the Pennsylvania Firefly Festival website for more information on Pennsylvania’s state insect-- the firefly-- and research and habitat issues in the Commonwealth and around the United States.
