Penn State Extension 4-Part Pennsylvania Forest Webinar Series Starts Sept. 12

Penn State Extension announced the four-part Pennsylvania Forest Webinar Series is back starting September 12 and runs through February 13!

This series covers a variety of topics, such as forest and wildlife management, water conservation, wood products, legacy planning, and more.

Private forest landowners, general interested public, and forestry professionals are all encouraged to register!

Noon to 1:00 and 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. sessions each day--

-- September 12: Deer Keds In Pennsylvania: Learn about the basics of deer keds, the blood-feeding flies that primarily feed on deer and sometimes bite people. There is concern that deer keds may transmit pathogens to humans and between animals. However, a lot of basic information about their natural history and distribution remains unknown. We will discuss what deer keds are, their life history, and recent research aimed at answering some of these basic but important questions. Click Here to register.

-- October 10: Small-Scale Propagation Of Trees And Shrubs For Afforestation Efforts: Not all species of native trees and shrubs are readily available throughout Pennsylvania. Propagating trees and shrubs at a small scale for afforestation efforts can be challenging, fun, and rewarding. This webinar will cover methods of propagation, tending, and seasonal considerations for many species, with more in-depth coverage of Kentucky coffee trees, honey locusts, and elderberry. -- November 14: Benefits of Large Woody Debris In Streams: This presentation will discuss the benefits of downed woody materials to streams and current methods of restoring this critical ecosystem component. Historically, streams in Penn’s Woods looked much different than they do today. Fallen woody debris in stream channels and floodplains had a profound effect on stream-valley ecosystems, and the removal of those materials often had unintended consequences. -- February 13: Seeing Forests 360 Degrees: New technologies allow us to see forests from different perspectives. From microscope to drone and satellite views, we have gained new perspectives about how forests function, where things are healthy, or where conservation measures are needed. This virtual event presents how the new technology of 360-degree videography provides another useful tool for teaching about and understanding forests and their various natural cycles, such as diurnal, seasonal, and successional change.
