On September 12, the French & Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust announced the launch of their new volunteer program-- the French & Pickering Conservation Corps. This program is an excellent opportunity for individuals hoping to learn more about open space preservation and ecological restoration, acquire new skills and knowledge, and looking to give back to their community. Conservation Corps volunteers will have a direct role in contributing to French & Pickering’s mission to preserve, steward and connect people to the land in northern Chester County. The program is funded in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, under the administration of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation in support of the Schuylkill Highlands Mini-Grant Program administered by Natural Lands. This unique program will provide Conservation Corps volunteers extensive, hands-on land management and safety training that will enable them to grow and learn as burgeoning stewards of open space. Built on a foundation of volunteerism, French & Pickering recognizes that volunteer and public education opportunities are more important to our success than ever as we increase programs, expand our trails, and add to the natural beauty of our most special places. “Our Conservation Corps offers a new way for French & Pickering to connect with people who share a passion for nature and a desire to make a difference,” noted Bill Gladden, French & Pickering’s Executive Director. Conservation Corps volunteers will participate in a variety of preservation, restoration, and conservation projects throughout the Thomas P. Bentley Nature Preserve and Templin Woods Preserve located in Glenmoore, Pa. Program projects will include tree and wildflower plantings, invasive plant species management, trail maintenance, and wildlife nest box monitoring. Efforts will aid in increasing plant and wildlife diversity and improving water quality of the French Creek. Applications to join the French & Pickering Conservation Corps volunteer program will close on October 1, 2023. To learn more and to apply, visit the Conservation Corps Program webpage.
