The Federation of Sportsmen & Conservationists and the Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation invite students in grades 4-12 to participate in its poster and photo contest to encourage creative expression and an appreciation and understanding of the outdoor world by the March 1 deadline. This year's theme is "Native and Invasive." The contests are open to school-aged children in grades 4-12 who live in Pennsylvania. Entries will compete against others in the same age group. Youngsters can attend public, private or home schools. When we take a walk, drive or bike through the beautiful Pennsylvania landscape, it is hard to imagine that some of the plants and animals thriving here don’t actually belong. From fish and snails to bugs and birds, there are many things that call Pennsylvania home, but is it their original home? Take a look around your yard, the roadside or a local creek and see if any of these everyday settings are home to native and/or invasive species. What types of plants, animals or insects are native to Pennsylvania? What ones are invasive? What do these plants or animals look like, and what can we do about them? By looking closer at nature, you will see how conservation efforts promote and protect our natural resources and how you can make your neighborhood a better place to live so you can enjoy the outdoors in your backyard.
