The Center For Great Lakes Literacy is now accepting applications from Grade 5-12 teachers for a spot aboard EPA's Lake Guardian research vessel for hands-on experience in scientific exploration in Lake Erie.

The deadline to apply is February 19.

The week-long scientific exploration of Lake Erie will take place July 7-13, 2024, providing educators with a hands-on opportunity to explore microplastics, phytoplankton, benthic organisms, sediment, and other Lake Erie-specific topics alongside scientists and researchers working on these important issues.

The annual expedition, rotating amongst the five Great Lakes, takes educators on a week-long voyage to explore and promote Great Lakes science.

These shipboard workshops provide educators the unique opportunity to live and work alongside Great Lakes scientists on a vessel conducting critical research while forging lasting relationships with Great Lakes researchers and other educators.

Participating educators also receive a stipend to support integration of Great Lakes literacy through experiential learning and stewardship with their learners. Past participants have described the experience as a “once-in-a lifetime, professional learning opportunity”.

The opportunity is organized by the Center for Great Lakes Literacy (CGLL) through a partnership with the US EPA Great Lakes National Program Office, and with funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and hosted locally this year by the Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Ohio Sea Grant Programs.

CGLL is a collaborative effort led by Sea Grant educators throughout the U.S. Great Lakes watershed.

CGLL fosters informed and responsible decisions that advance basin-wide stewardship by providing hands-on experiences, educational resources, and networking opportunities promoting Great Lakes literacy among an engaged community of educators, scientists, and youth.
