On February 26, the Independent Fiscal Office reported 2023 Pennsylvania natural gas production was up 1.0% over 2022, thanks to a 4.5% increase in the fourth quarter, but production is still below 2021 numbers.
Total annual production was 7,520 billion cubic feet in 2023; 7,441 billion cubic feet in 2022; 7,563 billion cubic feet in 2021; 7,077 billion cubic feet in 2020; and 6,816 billion cubic feet in 2019.
The number of new wells drilled-- 421 in 2023-- was the fewest drilled in year in the last decade.
The average Pennsylvania spot price for natural gas was $1.69, a decrease of $2.85 (-62.8%) from the prior year. The average price for the full year was $1.68, a decline of $3.89 (-69.9%) from the prior year.
Low natural gas prices throughout the year were driven by high inventory levels and mild weather.
