The latest issue of the UpStream newsletter from the Chester County-based Stroud Water Research Center is chock full of great stuff--

Stream Restoration Investment Impacts

After more than 50 years of the federal Clean Water Act and 86 years of the Pennsylvania Clean Streams Law, the United States and Pennsylvania have reached some major milestones in water quality improvements.

These laws have reduced extreme cases of pollution, such as rivers catching on fire or streams changing color due to industrial waste.

However, despite this progress and decades of significant investments, half of U.S. rivers and streams do not meet standards for fishing, swimming, or drinking.

In a new presentation, Stroud Water Research Center’s John Jackson, Ph.D., and Matt Ehrhart examine why.

Student Stewardship

The Montgomery School, a private school in Chester County, Pennsylvania, for students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, has been the site of an EnviroDIY Monitoring Station along Pickering Creek since 2017.

David Kline, a watershed education specialist at Stroud Water Research Center, was then a teacher at the school and facilitated its installation.

Starting A Watershed Organization

Members of the Little Lehigh Watershed Stewards tell how they started their watershed group to help care about the plants, animals, and about 200,000 people who rely on the Little Lehigh as a source of fresh water.

Tips To Prevent Algal Blooms

Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction of an early spring was right: unseasonably warm temperatures are here, and that means algae are already blooming in southeastern Pennsylvania.

In Chester County, the Valley Forge Chapter of Trout Unlimited alerted Stroud Water Research Center to an algal bloom in Valley Creek.

Wild & Scenic Film Festival

In February, attendees and guests celebrated 17 years of environmental short films at Trail Creek Outfitters’ Wild & Scenic Film Festival.

This year’s event was held at Upland Country Day School and featured another set of entertaining and inspiring films.

From a fun and poignant sketch about a polar bear living among humans to a true story about a blind man experiencing amazing summits, the audience saw examples of global problems and solutions.

Celebrate World Water Day - March 22

Stroud will celebrate World Water Day March 22 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at its research center, 970 Spencer Road, Avondale, with a family fun community event.

Visit the Watershed Education Mobile Lab and stream touch tank to discover live aquatic insects. Explore fishing and plant trees. Receive gardening tips and free plants. And tour the Stroud Center!

Activities will be offered in English and Spanish. Food will be available for purchase from On the Roll Food Truck.
