The Department of Agriculture published notices in the April 27 PA Bulletin announcing it is now accepting applications for Agricultural Conservation Research Grants (formal notice) and Agricultural Research Grants (formal notice). The deadline for applications is June 7. Ag Conservation Research The Department intends to make up to $1.5 million available for grants under the program. The notice included some suggested topics of research-- -- Quantify the impact of Manure Treatment Technologies (MTT) on water quality, -- Quantify the impact of precision feeding and review implications for nutrient reductions -- Quantify the climate benefits of best management practices -- Design a method in which to quantify the climate impacts of agriculture operations -- Identify the sources of nuisance emissions in the mushroom industry and best mitigation practices Questions should be directed to: Michael Roth, Director of Conservation and Innovation for the Department, at (717) 787-6257. Ag Research The notice included some suggested topics of research-- -- Measuring the impacts on the Chesapeake Bay on farm management practices -- Identify soil testing and remediation strategies for urban agriculture -- Survey carbon community planners -- Analyze and map energy generation from agricultural products, plastic products and waste products. -- Analyze options to reduce greenhouse gases emitted by normal agricultural operations -- Wildlife crop damage -- Chronic Wasting Disease strategy development -- Implementing Chapter 5 of the Pennsylvania Pollinator Protection Plan Questions should be directed to: Morgan Sheffield, Grants Coordinator for the Department of Agriculture, at (717) 787-3568.
