The latest Community Trees newsletter from Penn State Extension highlights partnership helping communities plant large bare root trees, Arbor Day celebrations and Woodland Health Practices Handbook and more Tree Planting Partnership Imagine a program that provides communities with large trees to plant at little to no cost, while eliminating the need for heavy machinery. That is exactly what a partnership between TreePennsylvania, Penn State Extension, and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has been successfully achieving. The partnership of these organizations has allowed this initiative to grow and spread across the state and assist communities as they are attempting to increase tree canopy cover. Since 1998, communities in northeastern Pennsylvania have worked with Penn State Extension to organize group orders of large bare root trees (1.5 to 2.5 inch caliper landscape trees) municipalities and volunteers have planted along streets and in parks. In 2020, this program expanded with a grant program to deliver over 2000 trees per year to communities across Pennsylvania during twice annual deliveries. This expanded state-wide program is coordinated by Tree Pennsylvania with assistance from Penn State Extension and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Woodland Health Practices Handbook The Woodland Health Practices Handbook: A Practitioner’s Guide for Creating, Enhancing, and Maintaining Natural Areas outlines small-scale natural areas management services that green industry professionals, such as arborists and landscape architects, can adopt to expand the services their business offers. Chesapeake Stormwater Training The Chesapeake Stormwater Network is offering online training for professionals that introduces the impacts of urban stormwater and how to mitigate those impacts through watershed restoration practices and municipal stormwater programs. The Chesapeake Urban Stormwater Professionals training program is a 14-webinar curriculum that is taught in two parts. Part 1 introduces the basic impacts of stormwater runoff and how they can be reduced or mitigated by stormwater and urban watershed restoration practices. Part 2 focuses on the essential functions of municipal (or MS4) stormwater programs, and how to improve local watershed management.
