Penn State Extension Hosts Sept. 6 Webinar On Classic Biological Control Of PA Invasive Species
|
The Penn State Extension will host a September 6 webinar on Classic Biological Control of Pennsylvania Invasive Species from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Pennsylvania has identified over 150 invasive plants, insects, pathogens, and animals that significantly impact both the environment and agricultural production, resulting in annual economic losses amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. The Pennsylvania Invasive Species webinar series is committed to addressing this critical issue. Throughout the sessions, we will highlight some of the most problematic invasive species found in Pennsylvania, examine their methods of establishment, and discuss effective strategies to mitigate their spread. Classical biological control can be a highly effective way to manage invasive species, but what factors contribute to a successful biocontrol program? Chrissy Dodge, a scientist at the USDA-APHIS Forest Pest Methods Laboratory, will provide an inside look at the lifecycle of a biocontrol program. She will cover everything from proper identification of pests and their natural enemies to post-release recovery and monitoring. Join her to learn more about foreign exploration, non-target selection, host specificity testing, and other essential aspects of classical biocontrol research. By delving into the complexities of invasive species challenges, our goal is to empower communities and spotlight the ongoing efforts led by state agencies. Join us as we showcase ongoing efforts and empower communities to combat this threat.
