Susquehanna River Basin Commission Announces Award Of $155,000+ To Support 34 Local Watershed Improvement Projects
|
On January 7, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission announced the award of more than $155,000 to support 34 local projects striving to improve the welfare of our watersheds. In its second year, the Stream & Watershed Enhancement Grant Program is supporting 34 community-based environmental projects or events that will enhance, restore or protect our basin’s waterways. “Through review of the applications, it’s clear there is no shortage of passion or resourceful ideas to better connect communities to our creeks, streams and rivers” said SRBC Executive Director Andrew Dehoff. “But there can be a shortage of funding, especially for smaller, volunteer-led groups. We’re pleased to be able to fill some of those gaps and help to make those visions of a healthier and safer Susquehanna River Basin reality.” Awardees include county conservation districts, environmental volunteer groups, educational institutions, municipalities, youth groups and a fire department. Abandoned mine drainage education, aquatic organism passage, a recreational disability access study, water trail and stream quality signage, waterway road salt monitoring, a pet waste cleanup campaign, and kayak safety training are just a few examples of the chosen projects that will create a more vibrant basin. Half of the projects awarded will directly benefit environmental justice communities.
