Abandoned Shale Gas Well Ordered Plugged
Roulette Oil & Gas Co., LLC - Violations: Abandoned Shale Gas Well Plugging Consent Order On January 21, the Department of Environmental Protection and Roulette Oil & Gas Co., LLC signed a consent order and agreement requiring the company to plug a shale gas well that was abandoned for 8 years in Hebron Township, Potter County. Shale Gas Water Impoundment Owner Fails To Meet Cleanup Standards
The Department of Environmental Protection published notice in the February 8 PA Bulletin saying Southwestern Energy Production Company failed to comply with the Act 2 Land Recycling Program cleanup standards at the Greenzweig shale gas wastewater impoundment in Herrick Township, Bradford County after five years. (PA Bulletin, page 1377) On January 2, 2025 DEP issued a disapproval letter for an Act 2 Final Report on the remediation of a release from the Greenzweig shale gas wastewater impoundment covering releases first documented by DEP on February 3, 2020. DEP’s investigation found the liner of the impoundment was compromised causing a slow release of wastewater at multiple locations around and under the facility. Read more here.

Pillar Energy PA, LLC - Violations: Abandoned Conventional Well, Leaking Gas January 17, 2025 inspection of the Albert King 1 conventional well in Freeport Township, Greene County found the well abandoned and not plugged and leaking gas. Response requested by February 17. Pillar Energy holds 84 conventional oil and gas well permits, 3 other wells listed as abandoned. DEP inspection report.
Fred C. Scheel - Violations: Abandoned Conventional Well January 28 inspection of the Fred C. Scheel 1 conventional well in New Sewickley Township, Beaver County as a result of a complaint found the well abandoned and not plugged. Response requested by February 28. Scheel holds 1 conventional well permit. DEP inspection report.
Anderson WB - Violations: Abandoned Conventional Well January 29, 2025 inspection of the Crozier 1 conventional well in South Beaver Township, Beaver County found it abandoned and not plugged. Production, waste generation and well integrity reports not submitted. Violations issued. Response requested by February 28. Anderson holds 2 conventional well permits. DEP inspection report.
Pin Oak Energy Partners, LLC - Violations: Abandoned Conventional Well January 29, 2025 inspection of the Dunton 1 conventional well in Cussewago Township, Crawford County found it abandoned and not plugged. Original violations issued on February 5, 2020. Violations continued. Response requested by February 20. Baird Oil hods 59 conventional oil and gas well permits.
Timberline Energy, Inc. - Violations: Abandoned Conventional Well, Leaking Gas (13 Months) February 4, 2025 follow-up inspection of the Jacob & Anna Hansen 1 conventional well in Le Boeuf Township, Erie County found the well abandoned and not plugged. Original violations issued December 7, 2023. Violations continued. No response requested by owner. Timberline Energy holds 730 conventional and related permits, 16 listed as abandoned wells. Reel Resources, Inc. - Violations: Abandoned Conventional Well, Leaking Gas (58 Months) February 5, 2025 follow-up inspection of the W. Clyde Swank 1 conventional well in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County found the well abandoned and unplugged, leaking gas, with no annual production, waste generation or well integrity reports. Original violations issued for most infractions on March 6, 2020. Violations continued. Response requested by February 28. Reel holds 40 conventional well permits. DEP inspection report.
Ronald Wise - Violations: 2 Abandoned Conventional Wells February 5, 2025 inspection of the Vanderzer 3 [DEP inspection report] and Vanderzer 5 [DEP inspection report] conventional wells in Summit Township, Butler County was found abandoned and not plugged. Failed to submit annual production, waste generation and well integrity reports. Violations issued. Response requested by February 21. Wise holds 4 conventional well permits.
Kiski Valley Gas Co. - Inspection: Abandoned Conventional Well, Leaking Gas February 12, 2025 inspection of the Leslie Hamilton 1 conventional well in Bell Township, Westmoreland County found it abandoned and not plugged, leaking gas. Evaluated for plugging under federal program. No violations issued. Kiski Gas holds 3 conventional well permits. DEP inspection report.
Manufacturers Light & Heat Co. - Inspection: 7 Abandoned Conventional Wells January 29 to February 11, 2025 inspections of 7 conventional wells found them abandoned and not plugged. Evaluated for plugging under federal program. No violations issued. Apollo Resources LLC - Violations: Failure To Cleanup Spills (3 Months) January 2, 2025 inspection of State Game Lands Well 51B in Dunbar Borough, Fayette County found the owner failed to remove production equipment, clean up areas of wastewater discharges and leaks, and remove a “plethora” of unmarked barrels in the compressor shed. Violations were originally issued for the spills, equipment and failure to submit a mechanical integrity report on October 8, 2024. No response requested of owner. DEP inspection report.
CC Wharton Estate - Violations: Failure To Cleanup Spills (10 Months) January 9, 2025 inspection of the McCown 1 conventional oil well in Cecil Township, Washington County found the well site in the same condition it was in March 8, 2024 when multiple violations were issued for spills. Problems at the well were originally identified from a complaint filed on November 16, 2023. Owner failed to respond to previous violations. No response requested of the owner. DEP inspection report.
Thomas Thurma Jean - Violations: Failure to Cleanup Spills (6 Months) January 14, 2025 inspections of the Hall 1 [DEP inspection report] and Hall 2 [DEP inspection report] conventional wells in Cecil Township, Washington County found no actions were taken to clean up multiple releases and spills at both the well sites. Violations originally issued on July 3, 2024. DEP received no response to the violations from the owner. New responses requested by January 29 & 30.
Apollo Resources LLC - Violations: Failure To Comply With Cleanup Order (5 Months) January 17, 2025 inspection of the Nelson 2 conventional well in Dunbar Township, Fayette County found the owner was still not in compliance with a spill cleanup order issued on August 9, 2024. Response requested by January 24. DEP inspection report.
Dannic Energy Corp - Violations: Wastewater Spill January 28, 2025 inspection of the Chagrin Bel 11 conventional well in Huston Township, Clearfield County found evidence of a leaking wastewater storage tank. Violations issued. Response requested by February 18. DEP inspection report.
Graham Michael D. - Violations: Wastewater Spill, Venting Gas February 7, 2025 inspection of the Morgan 1 conventional well in Smith Township, Washington County in response to a complaint found wastewater spills and well venting gas. Violations issued. Response requested by February 24. DEP inspection report.
Shale Gas Spills & Releases
Chesapeake Appalachia LLC - Violations: Wastewater Spill January 27, 2025 inspection of the Dunham BRA shale gas well pad in Albany Township, Bradford County in response to a spill notification by the pad owner on January 18, 2025. An area of the pad 35 x 35 feet was contaminated by an estimated 45 - 50 gallons of production wastewater from an unknown source. Impacted material was removed before the inspection. The day of the inspection the pad material was frozen solid so no conductivity readings could be taken. Violations issued. Response requested by February 10. DEP inspection report.
CNX Gas Co LLC - Violations: Wastewater Spill January 27, 2025 an inspection report was posted for the MOR42HS shale gas well pad in East Finley Township, Washington County. DEP was notified of a spill of an estimated 40 gallons of production wastewater by the pad owner on December 27, 2024. CNX said the release was discovered on January 25, 2025 and excavation of the impacted area-- 38 x 18 feet-- occurred over the next two days. Violations were issued as of January 27, 2025. Response requested by February 12. DEP inspection report.
EQT CHAP LLC - Violations: Wastewater Spills (1 Month) January 28, 2025 follow-up inspection of the Hambleton shale gas well pad in West Bethlehem Township, Washington County found progress is being made in cleaning up multiple releases, spill sites originally discovered on the pad December 16 during a routine inspection. 14 roll-off dumpsters were filled with contaminated material. DEP inspection report.
EQT ARO LLC - Violations: Wastewater Spills January 29, 2025 inspected the Lyle Landon shale gas well pad in Cogan House Township, Lycoming County in response to a notification of a spill on January 24 when a “dump” on one of the production wastewater tanks failed and caused a “mist” of fluid outside containment and a spill inside containment. Response requested by February 21. DEP inspection report.

Lawrence Beth Ann Adams 2 conventional gas well in Washington Township, Lawrence County found the owner failed to comply with a July 17, 2024 DEP order to submit a plan to replug the well. No action taken by owner. Violations continued. No requests of owner. DEP inspection report.
Chesapeake Appalachia LLC - Violations: Defective Shale Gas Cement/Casing, Gas Leak (23 Months) January 27, 2025 inspection found at the Masso 24HC shale gas well in Auburn Township, Susquehanna County found the cemented well annulus continued to leak gas indicative of defective cementing/casing. Original violations issued February 2, 2023 for failure to notify DEP of defective cementing/casing. Violations continued. Annulus remains open to allow for venting. Monitoring program will be continued. DEP inspection report.
Columbia Gas Transmission LLC - Violations: Leaking Gas Well January 31, 2025 inspection of the WT Woods 543 conventional gas well serving the Donegal Gas Storage Reservoir in Donegal Township, Washington County was found to be leaking gas. Violation issued. Response requested by February 28. DEP inspection report.
Columbia Gas Transmission LLC - Violations: Leaking Gas Well February 5, 2025 inspection of the TH Wallace L3876 conventional gas well serving the Donegal Gas Storage Reservoir in Donegal Township, Washington County was found to be leaking gas. Diversified Prod LLC - Inspection: Gas Leaking From Conventional Well February 14, 2025 inspection of the Ada Callen 3464 conventional well in Bell Township, Westmoreland County found the well leaking gas. No violations issued. DEP spoke with owner and recommended the gas leak be addressed as soon as possible. DEP inspection report.

Keystone Land Resources Inc. - Violations: Erosion & Sedimentation January 28, 2025 inspection of the Riggs 4 conventional well site in Aleppo Township, Greene County found well plugging operations appeared to have started-- delayed from the original October 29 start date-- but multiple erosion and sedimentation violations were found at the site. Violations were issued. Response requested by February 17. DEP inspection report.
Repsol Oil & Gas USA LLC - Violations: Erosion & Sedimentation (8 Months) January 29, 2025 follow-up inspection of the York R shale gas well site in Apolacon Township, Susquehanna County found the owner still in violation of erosion and sedimentation permit for not conducting inspection of BMPs after each stormwater event and repairing the BMPs as needed. DEP noted these same observations were made during inspections on May 23, 2024 and October 22, 2024. This time violations were issued. Response requested by February 13, 2025. DEP inspection report.
Keystone Clearwater Solutions, LLC - Violations: Pipeline Erosion, Stream Encroachments (19 Months) February 3, 2025 inspection of the Brooks Water Impoundment pipeline interconnection in Springville Township, Susquehanna County found the same erosion and sedimentation and stream crossing violations DEP found when it issued violations on July 6, 2023.
